Development of Seamless Steel Pipe Helps You Know About It

The following are the development of the seamless steel pipes. Each year, millions of tons of seamless steel pipes are produced among which API steel pipe is a striking example. API steel pipe is widely used to transport gas across cities, towns and even nations. Other types of lightweight seamless steel pipes are applied in the auto industry, the construction industry, heating and plumbing systems, just to name a few. The production of seamless steel pipe begins with raw steel cast into a series of dies. After melting down in the furnace, the material is stretched out into a seamless tube, producing a seamless steel pipe after the cooling process.

The techniques for making seamless steel pipe have undergone remarkable development in a time span of 200 years or so. The history of seamless welded steel pipe can be traced back to the early 1900s in London. At the time London government decided to equip the entire city with coal burning lamp system. Quality, durable pipelines were needed to link various supply station and to transfer gas. A group of scientists and technicians spent about one year to upgrade the technology of making steel pipe. The earliest seamless steel pipes were then introduced. Workers drilled a hole through a round billet and had it melted won in furnace. Then the melting iron was poured into a certain type of mold and was elongated to be a seamless steel pipe.

The success of London's lighting system brought further development for the pipe-making industry. James Russell patented a quick and inexpensive technique for making seamless steel pipes in the early 1900s. In his method, the opposite edges of a flat iron strip were joined together. After the material was heated and melted down, a drop hammer was used to fold the edges. Finally the pipe was passed through a groove and rolling mill. However, before long a better method was introduced on which modern pipe-making procedures are based. Thin sheets of iron were heated and drawn through a cone-shaped opening.  When the material went through the opening, its edges curled up and created a pipe . In 1888 an improved method appeared in which the billet was molded around a fireproof brick core. The brick was removed after the material cooled down, leaving a hole in the middle. The brick method was used for many years until the new roller techniques came out.

Although these methods in the old days were hardly efficient and cost-effective, they were undoubtedly inspiring and creative for later inventors and scientists. As the market demand for seamless steel pipes which is also a kind of black steel pipe and API steel pipes tremendously increases, many investors and technicians devote themselves to the making of seamless steel pipes. Without a welded seam, the iron is melted and drilled a hole through the center of a solid cylinder. Strong but lightweight, seamless steel pipes were widely used for making bike frames at first. As time goes by, the bicycle industry gradually gives way to the auto industry. And seamless steel pipes, API steel pipes in particular, are increasingly needed for connecting gas and oil lines across cities or throughout countries. The development of the seamless steel pipes clearly tells us the quality and the reputation of the products.
