A Concise Description of Stainless Steel Pipe Development

All rolled steels that have openings on both ends and hollow sections can be referred to steel pipes. According to the different ratio of length and fracture surface perimeter, the steel pipes can be divided into various subordinate categories, but all of them belong to tubular products. Each product has its development process. The stainless steel pipe development rightly explains the sentence. Starting from black steel pipe and then to the galvanized iron pipe, the plastic pipe and finally to the stainless steel pipe now, the stainless steel pipe development has experienced a long and winding road. The stainless steel pipe development has a close relationship with the development of stainless steel. To some degree, the stainless steel pipe development is one of the presentations of stainless steel development.

The development of stainless steel can be divided into five steps. They are ferritin stainless steel, martensitic stainless steel, austenitic stainless steel, precipitation hardening stainless steel and ferrite- austenitic stainless steel. In 1931, the British metal expert Brearley discovered that when a kind of metal contains 0.4 percent carbon and 9 to 16 percent chromium, it has good corrosion resistance. This kind of metal might be the earliest stainless steel. This is the first step of stainless steel development. Then the German experts, Strauss and Maurer, found that a kind of steel containing enough amounts of chromium and nickel has the ability of oxidation and acid resistance.

This is the second step of stainless steel development. It is almost at the same time that the French expert Chevenard invented a kind of special steel which contained 10 to 15 percent chromium and 20 to 40 percent nickel. This is the third step of stainless steel development. The three kinds of steel mentioned above are the earlier achievement of the ferritic stainless steel, martensitic stainless steel and austenitic stainless steel, respectively. When using stainless steel pipe, people still feel inadequate. So the stainless steel pipe development enters into new periods. Despite the fact that austenitic stainless steel has a good corrosion resistance, but its intensity is low and can't adjust as the heat changes.

Therefore, austenitic stainless steel is not suitable to be used in high strength requirement parts. Although the martensitic stainless steel performs well in adjusting heat and has high mechanical strength, but its corrosion resistance is poor. Thus, it is limited in application. Gradually, a kind of new steel is developed. It not only has good corrosion resistance, but also can adjust its mechanical properties according to the heat treatment method. This magic steel is the precipitation hardening stainless steel which means the stainless steel pipe development has a new broke through. The final step of the stainless steel pipe development is the well-known ferrite- austenitic stainless steel pipe.
