Methods to Measure the Galvanized Steel Pipe

The time of issue:2014-2-7 10:13:40       Author:

When you choose the galvanized steel pipe instead of API steel pipe, you must have the nominal size as well as its length in mind. However, due to the circular shape of the pipe, it is difficult of measure these two values. Nominal size refers to estimating the inside diameter of the galvanized steel pipe, but the estimated value is not the real inside diameter, just close to the real one because you cannot measure the inside diameter directly. And the length must be longer for you will need to attach some other machinery fittings to the galvanized steel pipe or insert the threaded linking ends while the API steel pipe doesn't need to.

The measure steps of galvanized steel pipe are as follows: In order to get the most accurate values, you should ensure the tape measure, which you are using to measure the distance between two edges of fitting, stick to the galvanized steel pipe tightly. And make sure you have prolonged the extra length for the entering of threads in a screwed way. Actually, the extra length should permit for or five screwed threads to enter into. You must consider it fully to avoid the waste of the lack.

In order to measure the inside diameter of the galvanized steel pipe which is different from the API black steel pipe, we need to utilize a ruler or a tape measure the distance between two inside walls to pass through the open end. It is difficult to enter into the inside of the galvanized steel pipe or you cannot cut it directly. Thus, you'd better use tape measure to surround the outside of the galvanized steel pipe closely to figure out the diameter. And remember to label the repeated parts and remove them when estimated the values. If the pipe you measure is Schedule 40 pipe that is the general specification used in houses, you need to put the measures value divide by 3.14 and minus 0 .25 to get the estimated value of the inside diameter. If the galvanized steel pipe is Schedule 80 or "extra strong," you should minus 0.125 to get estimated inside diameter. And minus 0.334 for Schedule 120 that has another name "double extra strong".

Round off the estimated inside diameter which is close to the real value to the galvanized steel pipe which unlike the API steel pipe with smaller nominal size. General normal sizes of the galvanized steel pipe are 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1 1/4, 1 1/2, 2 and 2 1/2. For the smaller pipe, the difference between measured value and real value may be a little large, while as for larger welded steel pipe, you should extract the value. For example, a 1 1/2 -inch nominal pipe has an inside diameter of slightly less than one inches.
