History of The Invention of Seamless Steel Pipe

Steel pipes can be found in a lot of places for various purposes. Every year, pipe producers around the globe manufacture millions of tons of steel pipes, making it one of the most versatile products in the steel industry. API steel pipe for instance is used underground to transfer gas across cities, towns and even nations. Steel pipes are also used in construction projects to protect wires or other fragile items from being damaged. The majority of steel pipes are heavy but some can be light in weight. The light steel pipes are perfect for manufacturing bikes and cars. Other places they find utility is in refrigeration units, heating and plumbing systems, and medicine, just to name a few.

In general, steel pipes fall into two categories: welded steel pipes and seamless steel pipes. Welded steel pipes were invented and introduced to the market in around 1800s. With the development of technology, they have steadily evolved. The widely used API steel pipes are generally seamless steel pipes. The production of both welded and seamless steel pipes begins with raw steel cast into some certain kind of mold. By stretching the steel out into a seamless tube, a seamless steel pipe is produced while by forcing and sealing the edges together, you will get a welded steel pipe. is

The invention of modern seamless steel pipe can be traced back to the early 1900s when its predecessor welded steel pipe underwent great development. In the 1920s, London authorities decided to equip the entire city with coal burning lamp system. To achieve the goal, continuous pipelines were required to link and transport the coal gas. A special committee was set up with a large sum of money to explore and improve the technology of making steel pipe. It took the scientists and technicians about one year to upgrade steel pipe and join most of the barrels in the city. Later the coal burning lighting system proved to be a great success, leading to more demand for strong, durable steep pipes. To meet the huge market demand, many an inventor and investor began to look for new ways to make steel pipes.

Historic records reveal that the invention of seamless steel pipes were already done by British iron companies in as early as 1840. The craft and technology then are not comparable to those of modern times yet they are somewhat inspiring and creative as well. Ironworkers in the 1900s made seamless steel pipes by hand with the help of some equipment. A hole was firstly drilled through a solid, round billet. Then the billet was heated in furnace for a while and poured into a certain type of mold. After the casting process, the previous billet was elongated to be a seamless steel pipe. However, this method is time-consuming and dangerous for ironworkers. Also it was by no means easy to drill a hole exactly in the center of the billet. Therefore, the earliest seamless steel pipes were generally uneven with one side being thicker than the other.

The welded steel pipe and black steel pipe are also available.
